STATEMENT BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE PAN AFRICAN POSTAL UNION (PAPU) ON
THE WORLD POST DAY COMMEMORATIONS ON 9TH OCTOBER 2025.
THEME “POST FOR PEOPLE: LOCAL SERVICE. GLOBAL REACH.”
As we celebrate World Post Day on 9th October 2025, I am profoundly honoured to highlight the vital role postal services play in connecting our communities and empowering people across Africa, and beyond.
This year’s theme “Post for People: Local Service. Global Reach” is a message of “Uniting Africa, Connecting the World” that resonates well with PAPU’s Mission of coordinating activities aimed at developing postal services across the African continent in pursuit of creating “One Postal Territory in Africa”, which ensures that the Post remains a relevant and vital platform for communication, trade, commerce and government services. In supporting economic growth and anchoring the African Union’s Vision 2063 the Post also contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Postal services are still as vital to our economies as ever before, delivering more than just letters and parcels. The Post delivers hope, opportunities and trust to Africa’s citizenry. From remote rural villages to urban cities, our postal networks – with a footnote of approximately 25,000 outlets – span the continent, connecting 1.5 billion people and businesses alike.
While pursuing regional and global integration through innovative services and digital solutions, postal services support economic growth and development while promoting digital inclusion. The Post enables citizen access to essential services, facilitates e-commerce and provides financial inclusion to unserved and underserved communities, representing more than 85% rural and peri-urban dwellers.
As we celebrate this year’s World Post Day, we do recall the importance of international cooperation and private sector partnerships in the postal sector. Our collaboration with the Universal Postal Union and other stakeholders, including Wider Postal Sector Players, enables us to address common challenges and seize opportunities for desired levels of inclusive growth, socio-economic development and sustainability.
On this special day, I therefore seize this opportunity to engender a message of hope and commend the dedication and hard work of postal workers across Africa who deliver essential services with passion and commitment.
Let us continue to work together to build a stronger, more connected Africa and a brighter future for our African citizens and the greater world.
Happy World Post Day 2025!
Long live the African Post!
Long live African Solidarity!
Dr. Sifundo Chief Moyo
